So you've just received your freshly sharpened scissors from Blade Runner and you obviously love them.
Here are 3 tips to keep your scissors slicing through hair cleaner for longer.
  1. Clean your scissors after each day, removing any dirt and debris. If left to build up this will build up friction between your blades .
  2. Store your scissors in a pouch or suitable case, never keep them loose in a draw, even a slight nock can damage your blades  .
  3. Keep your scissors balanced. Unbalanced scissors can blunt the blades quicker due to movement during the cut.

The Birth of Blade Runner

Blade Runner Scissor Sharpening was founded on a cold spring morning back in 2017 while sat in A&E alongside a plastic bag containing the end of my finger...

After 15 years of working as an accomplished chef, this was the last straw for me. Seconds after sharpening my knife and halfway through shredding a red cabbage, I had cut the my fingertip clean off. I had to do something different with my life and this was exactly the sharp and quite frankly painful wake-up call I needed.

The idea was originally conceived a few years earlier while working as a chef. Now everyone knows what chefs are like with their knives, but I had a random encounter with a mobile knife sharpener, but this guy wasn't like any other I had ever met. He was smartly presented and clearly knew his way round a commercial kitchen, great value, but what ultimately impressed me the most was the service he provided. He was the best I'd ever met! From that moment I vowed to only let him sharpen my equipment because I saw the care and attention to detail he took with my precious knives.

Again, through a strange series of events I ended up spending a year with him sharpening knives. during this time I understood why he was smartly dressed and knew his way around a kitchen and done a great job. He was a professional! And most of all he valued his reputation.
While out on our rounds we were approached in the street outside a salon by a stylist asking if we could possibly sharpen her scissors. to which my boss immediately replied, "sorry we can't, we don't have the correct equipment!"

Well that was my light bulb moment! One day I was going to start a scissor sharpening empire using all the values I had learnt.

Back to 2017... After a quick call to the bank of Mum and Dad (apparently that's still a thing even in your 30's) I had secured enough cash to import the best convex scissor sharpening system on the market and a van to go mobile.

Next, a call to my boss to tell him I would be returning to work on the 1st of never. He hung up on me....

While my fingertip healed I spent countless hours understanding the engineering of scissors; what all the different types were used for and what angles are needed for each type of scissor. It got to the point where I was dreaming about scissors.

I already knew the fundamentals of sharpening high quality steel and how it's made so I practised on a good friends old unwanted scissors, perfecting my craft.
My mission was to be the very best, to wow my customers with my work, to be smart and presentable, to be a professional!
After a few months of intensive practice and training, I stole my friends favourite Joewell scissors and sharpened them. Now this is a friend who would literally stick them in my back if I had ruined them.. my back is still in one piece!
He was genuinely shocked and surprised at how good they were! He confessed to thinking I was crazy for even trying to become a scissor sharpener and the next day told me to go to his salon and do all of the scissors for his staff and he would foot the bill.

The moment I got the scissors off his staff I was amazed at the state of the work the previous sharpener had done, I would genuinely be embarrassed to call that my work. I done my best to repair the damage done and sharpened them back to their original factory angles. Everyone was truly impressed and from that moment I knew I had made 5 customers for life, and Blade Runner was born.
